When I heard the reading from the Book of Kings at Mass one Sunday, I just knew Elijah had to become an illumination. These days, it is so easy to identify with his feelings of desolation. He just wanted to give up. However…Scripture reports that God is not through with Elijah yet, and so an Angel brings him nourishment, and tells him to get up and eat. Part of his journey still lies ahead. And so I chose Elijah for the cover of this year’s calendar, to remind us that God always provides us with the strength we need to go on. He has a plan for each of us, and like Elijah, wants us to keep moving forward.
As you go through the months of the year ahead, each of the saints and prophets celebrated in this 2020 calendar, offers us bread for our own journey. Their lives help to energize us, reminding us, that while it is perfectly natural to grow weary and exhausted from bad news and fear, we, like Elijah cannot give up.
It is my hope that you will take strength and courage from these pages and that God’s grace will continue to nourish your mind and heart as the year unfolds.
